Madden 12

I’m pretty happy for Peyton Willis, a relative unknown, for his selection as the next cover athlete for Madden 12.  But I think EA, and really the entire Madden 12 community blew it.

Earlier this year, EA presented a selection from each NFL team and the fans were allowed to vote in a tiered elimination contest for the next cover athlete.  Seattle’s representative was unique in that it wasn’t an athlete but was the 12th man.  I don’t want to come across as a homer here, but Seattle should have won this honor.

First, the 12th man as the cover athlete for Madden 12 would have been a cool pairing.

But more importantly, this off season we’ve seen some stupidly rich men fighting with some even more obscenely rich men about how to divide $9 billion with the 2012 football season at stake.  The real potential losers with this labor dispute are the fans.  Having the 12th man, the fans, on the cover of this year’s Madden would have served as a reminder, front and center, of who’s really important to the megabucks industry that is the NFL.

But I guess that would have made too much sense.
